TL;DR
USANA Procosamine pairs the InCelligence Joint-Support Complex — vegetarian glucosamine with Meriva Bioavailable Curcumin — with vitamin C. Three tablets a day provide 1,500 mg of glucosamine hydrochloride. The interesting parts are the details: how a synovial joint is actually built, why the glucosamine here comes from fermentation rather than shellfish, and how the Meriva phytosome gets around curcumin's absorption problem.
You can watch the English video walkthrough here: USANA Procosamine Explained: What's Inside and How It Supports Your Joints.
The Hinge You Take for Granted
Running, climbing, dancing, wrapping your arms around someone — every one of those moments runs through a joint. It is the part of the body that is easiest to take for granted, right up until it isn't.
The body has several types of joints. The most common is the synovial joint: the type with the greatest range of motion, and the only type with a narrow space between the bones. That space is called the joint cavity, and it is where most of the work happens.
What Is Actually Inside a Joint
The cavity is filled with synovial fluid, made mostly of hyaluronic acid. It lubricates the joint, carries nutrients to the cartilage capping the ends of the bones, and cushions like a shock absorber. Around all of it, a capsule of connective tissue along with ligaments and tendons keeps the joint stable.
Look closer at that cartilage. Articular cartilage is built from specialised joint cells called chondrocytes, suspended in a gel-like extracellular matrix. Inside the matrix you will find water, collagen, and proteoglycans — sugars linked to proteins whose job is to bind the water a joint needs to stay lubricated.
So where does the material for all of that come from? The body uses an amino sugar called glucosamine to support the production of proteoglycans and glycosaminoglycans, the same family as the hyaluronic acid in synovial fluid. One nutrient sits underneath most of what you just read.
What Actually Shapes Joint Health
Four things, mostly: age, genetics, weight, and the wear and tear that comes with activity. You cannot stop the clock or change your genes. The other two are where there is room to move.
Which leaves three practical habits:
- Manage your weight, so the joints are not carrying excess pressure that could change their structure.
- Get regular, moderate exercise — cartilage stays healthy precisely by being moved and loaded.
- Eat a varied, healthy diet that gives connective tissue the nutrients it works with every day.
There is a reason to start now rather than later: once articular cartilage is gone, it is gone. The goal is not to chase it back, it is to look after what is already there.
What's Inside Procosamine
Vitamin C is critical to the production of collagen, the structural protein that gives connective tissue its strength and stability. Ligaments, tendons, cartilage — collagen runs through all of them.
Manganese helps give collagen its strength, and it plays a role in the production of synovial fluid, the same fluid that lubricates the joint cavity.
Glucosamine encourages the production of collagen and hyaluronic acid, helping to lubricate the joints and maintain their healthy function. The body forms glucosamine on its own; a supplement simply helps keep a supply available for when it is needed.
Three tablets a day provide 1,500 mg of glucosamine hydrochloride. That amount matters more as the years go by, because hydration inside the joints naturally declines with age.
Vegetarian Glucosamine, Not Shellfish
One more thing sets the formula apart. Most glucosamine supplements are derived from shellfish. USANA uses a high-quality glucosamine HCl produced by fermentation rather than from animals, then blended with potassium and magnesium sulfate, delivering the same benefits as glucosamine sulfate in a vegetarian formula.
Worth clearing up while we are here: sulfate is not sulfa. Sulfa is short for sulfonamides, a class of antibiotics. Sulfur is an essential mineral found in nearly all proteins. No USANA product contains sulfa drugs.
Meriva, and the Absorption Problem
Curcumin is the yellow compound that comes from turmeric, well known for its antioxidant properties. There is a catch: in its standard form, curcumin is poorly absorbed, so traditionally you would have to use a great deal of it to get the benefits.
Meriva approaches that with a phytosome. The curcumin is combined with a phospholipid — a type of fat from soy lecithin — which helps it pass through cell membranes more easily.
You may have seen curcumin liposomes on the shelf. A liposome packages curcumin inside a group of lipid molecules; a phytosome forms a chemical bond with the lipid itself, so more of the active ingredient sits in each molecule. The phytosome structure has been shown to be a better delivery system, and research has shown Meriva to be nearly 30 times more bioavailable than standard curcumin preparations. A smaller dose can therefore provide the desired result.
Most joint supplements pair glucosamine with chondroitin sulfate. USANA went a different way: an observational study showed that glucosamine used together with Meriva Bioavailable Curcumin Complex was more effective than the combination of glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate, and that is why those two ingredients form the InCelligence Joint-Support Complex.
Three Activities the Complex Promotes
These nutrients do more than supply raw material. The complex is designed to promote three activities:
- Autophagy — the natural quality-control process by which cartilage cells renew their own function, helping preserve healthy articular cartilage and support healthy joint aging.
- A healthy immune and inflammatory response after exercise — exercise can stimulate the immune system and result in temporary inflammation, which is part of the body's natural recovery mechanisms; promoting a healthy response helps restore normal structure and function to joints and tendons.
- Antioxidant protection — excessive oxidative stress can damage the structure of joint cells and tissues, and cartilage is especially vulnerable. The curcumin and the vitamin C provide antioxidant activity and encourage the body to produce its own antioxidant enzymes, such as glutathione.
Beyond Joints: Skin
Two words from earlier may sound familiar in a different context: hyaluronic acid and collagen. By supporting the production of both, Procosamine may also offer benefits for the skin's appearance — hydration from one, firmness and elasticity from the other.
How to Take It
Adults take three tablets daily, preferably with meals. It is formulated for healthy adults, and each bottle contains 84 tablets. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication or managing a health condition, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting any new supplement.
On timing: articular cartilage does not contain blood vessels, so it receives nutrients more slowly by absorbing them from its surroundings. Research has shown that glucosamine plus exercise can demonstrate differences for some people between four and 12 weeks. Results vary from person to person.
