What Is Inside USANA BiOmega? From Sourcing to Purification

A plain-language breakdown of USANA BiOmega: which fish it comes from, why the oil is distilled twice, what re-esterified triglyceride form means, and exactly how much EPA and DHA each capsule delivers.

Introduction

Most people shopping for fish oil look at one number: milligrams of fish oil. But three other things decide whether a fish oil is worth taking — which fish it came from, how it was purified, and what form the omega-3s are in once purification is finished.

This guide takes USANA BiOmega apart along those three lines, then covers what is actually in each capsule and how to take it.

If the terms omega-3 and fish oil still blur together, start with Omega-3 vs Fish Oil and come back here for the product layer.

Why Fish Oil Deserves Its Own Look

Fat is not one thing. It forms every cell membrane you have, cushions your vital organs, insulates nerve fibres so signals travel cleanly, and carries the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K.

But different fats behave very differently. Saturated and trans fats add load when you take in too much of them. Polyunsaturated fats — and the omega-3s in fish oil in particular — are among the more beneficial.

The problem is intake. Dietary surveys cited in the official material suggest up to 90% of people are not getting enough omega-3 from food alone. At the same time, the modern diet delivers far more omega-6 than omega-3 — the refining and hydrogenation that give commercial oils a long shelf life also strip out the omega-3s they once carried.

That is the gap a concentrated fish oil is built to close.

Where the Fish Comes From

BiOmega is made from responsibly sourced wild fish, primarily anchovies and sardines from cold, deep ocean water.

Choosing small fish is a contaminant decision, not a cost one. These species are short-lived and sit low on the marine food chain, so they accumulate far fewer heavy metals and environmental contaminants than larger, longer-lived fish such as salmon or tuna.

BiOmega is also a whole-body fish oil, not a fish liver oil — a different source material with a different nutrient profile.

Purification: High-Vacuum Molecular Distillation, Twice

Once the raw oil arrives, it is purified by high-vacuum molecular distillation — and USANA runs it twice.

Molecular distillation separates compounds by boiling point. Under vacuum and with very low heat exposure, it draws off heavy metals, PCBs, pesticide residues and trans-fatty acids. The low temperature matters: omega-3s are heat-sensitive, and aggressive purification damages them.

After distillation the oil is tested again for heavy metals and other contaminants, and the finished product meets British Pharmacopoeia specifications for purity and quality.

Re-esterification: Purity and Natural Form Together

This is the step that separates BiOmega from most fish oils, and the one most often skipped over.

Omega-3s in natural fish oil already exist in the triglyceride form — but alongside impurities, and at relatively low concentration. Purification fixes that, yet it leaves the omega-3s as ethyl esters. Purity and concentration go up; the natural molecular form is gone.

BiOmega adds one more step: re-esterification, converting those purified ethyl esters back into triglycerides.

The result keeps the purity and concentration that distillation delivers, and recovers the metabolic advantage of the natural form. Research cited in the official material indicates that, compared with the ethyl ester form, the triglyceride form improves the bioavailability of EPA and DHA by up to 41% — more of what you swallow is available for your body to use.

What Is in Each Capsule

Item Per capsule
Concentrated omega-3 triglycerides (fish) 1,000 mg
of which EPA 320 mg
of which DHA 230 mg
Total omega-3 triglycerides 600 mg
Vitamin D3 2.5 mcg (100 IU)
Energy about 10 calories

Three more formulation details:

  • No trans-fatty acids, and guaranteed to be virtually free of heavy metals, organic contaminants and pesticides.
  • Contains mixed natural tocopherols to slow oxidation of the omega-3s during storage.
  • Flavoured with lemon oil to reduce the fishy aftertaste people associate with fish oil.
  • Contains no wheat, oats, rye, barley or gluten.

Why There Is Vitamin D in It

Pairing vitamin D with fish oil is deliberate.

Vitamin D is fat-soluble and absorbs best with fat present, which makes a fish oil capsule an ideal delivery medium. And recent research has found an unexpectedly high prevalence of vitamin D shortfall across Australia and New Zealand — where topping up through sun exposure means trading off UV exposure.

Since there are vitamin D receptors on virtually every cell in the body, delivering both nutrients together supports cellular health more completely than either one alone.

What Omega-3s Do in the Body

The descriptions below follow the official material, which uses "supports" and "helps maintain" language rather than treatment claims.

At the cellular level. Cell membranes are built from fatty acids and act as a selective barrier, regulating the water, oxygen and nutrients moving in and out. A diet heavy in saturated fat can leave those membranes rigid; omega-3s, DHA in particular, help keep them fluid so that exchange keeps working.

Cardiovascular. EPA and DHA help maintain healthy triglyceride and HDL cholesterol levels, support endothelial health and arterial flexibility, and help maintain healthy blood flow and a healthy resting heart rate.

Brain and nervous system. DHA is a major structural component of brain cell membranes. It sustains the development, structure and function of the brain and central nervous system, and supports communication between neurons.

Eyes. DHA concentrates naturally in the retina, supporting the fluidity of photoreceptor membranes and retinal integrity, and supporting the gland that produces the oily part of your tears.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding. Alongside a quality prenatal supplement, BiOmega supports a healthy pregnancy, a stable mood after delivery, and normal fetal growth and development. DHA matters particularly for the developing brain, eyes and nerves, especially in the final trimester, and continued supplementation while breastfeeding goes on supporting cognitive development and healthy eye function.

Joints, bones and activity. Supports joint function, helps maintain the health of articular cartilage, may help ease muscle soreness after a workout, and supports strong, healthy bones.

Other. EPA and DHA have also been shown to help sustain liver function and to support the hormone balance relevant to overall breast health.

How to Take It

Adults take two capsules daily, preferably with meals. Taking it with food also helps reduce any aftertaste.

Keep out of reach of children. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking prescription medication or managing a health condition, consult your physician before use.

FAQ

How much EPA and DHA does each BiOmega capsule contain?
Each capsule provides 1,000 mg of concentrated omega-3 triglycerides from fish, including 320 mg EPA and 230 mg DHA, with 600 mg total omega-3 triglycerides.
Which fish is it made from?
Small, responsibly sourced wild fish from cold, deep ocean water — anchovies and sardines. These are short-lived species low on the marine food chain, so they accumulate far fewer contaminants.
What does re-esterified triglyceride form mean?
Purification leaves the omega-3s as ethyl esters. BiOmega adds one more step, converting those purified ethyl esters back into the natural triglyceride form while keeping the purity and concentration that distillation provides.
Why is there vitamin D in a fish oil?
Vitamin D is fat-soluble, so a fish oil capsule is an ideal delivery medium. Each capsule contains 2.5 mcg (100 IU) of vitamin D3.
How do I take it?
Adults take two capsules daily, preferably with meals. Taking it with food also helps reduce any aftertaste.
