Introduction
Training poses the question; recovery is the body's answer. Every gain in strength, endurance and conditioning is quietly made in the repair and rebuilding that follow a session. Recover well, and the next session can be stronger and longer; fall short, and soreness, fatigue and strain on the joints accumulate.
This guide sets out a rigorous, complete recovery nutrition plan: what each stage of recovery requires, what the science shows, which USANA product supports it, and why so many professional athletes entrust their careers to USANA.
Start With the Basics: Sleep, Nutrition, Fluids and Electrolytes
- Sleep. Most adults need 7–9 hours; much of muscle repair and hormone release takes place during sleep.
- Nutrition. Without adequate nutrition, the body lacks the raw materials for repair.
- Fluids and electrolytes. After training, replace both the water and the electrolytes you have lost.
With these foundations in place, precise supplementation brings recovery to completion.
Four Principles for Choosing a Supplement
Sports scientists evaluate a supplement through four questions, each building on the last:
- Is it safe?
- Is it legal in your sport? Free of substances on the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) list, with a low risk of contamination.
- Does it work? Is there research behind it?
- How does it work? Does the mechanism make sense?
Every nutrient in this guide has been chosen against these standards. Each section below sets out the scientific basis and the corresponding USANA product.
Seven Essential Nutrients for Recovery
1. Protein: the building material for muscle
Training causes tiny amounts of muscle damage. Protein supplies the amino acids to repair and build muscle, and it is the best-studied recovery nutrient.
The International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN) recommends:
- 1.4–2.0 g of protein per kg of body weight per day for most people who exercise;
- spread across the day, about 20–40 g every 3–4 hours.
For a 75 kg person, that is roughly 105–150 g a day. Hitting that at every meal is hard, so a protein shake after training or at breakfast is the easiest way to close the gap. USANA Whey Protein Isolate uses grass-fed whey, which digests quickly and is low in lactose (availability varies by market).

2. Daily foundation nutrition: USANA CellSentials
The more you train, the higher your energy needs and sweat losses, and the more micronutrients your body uses. B vitamins turn food into energy, vitamin D and magnesium support normal muscle function, zinc and vitamin C support normal immune function, and antioxidant nutrients help cells handle the oxidative stress of training.
USANA CellSentials is USANA's flagship product: two bottles, Vita-Antioxidant and Core Minerals, with USANA's US-patented InCelligence Complex. USANA describes it as a foundation of optimal nourishment together with powerful antioxidant protection and cellular renewal support.
Every sports nutrition plan should begin here: first secure the foundation, then refine. The directions are two tablets of each, twice daily with food.
Both CellSentials products are NSF Certified for Sport. See How to Take USANA CellSentials.

3. Omega-3 fish oil: helps ease post-workout muscle soreness
The muscle ache that peaks a day or two after hard training is called delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS).
Research supports omega-3 here: two meta-analyses published in 2026, pooling randomised controlled trials, found that omega-3 supplementation reduced delayed onset muscle soreness and lowered markers of muscle damage (creatine kinase) and inflammation. EPA and DHA also support joint function and heart health — and most people do not eat enough oily fish.
USANA BiOmega is made from small cold-water fish (anchovies and sardines), purified by high-vacuum molecular distillation, twice, then converted back to the natural triglyceride form. On the Australia/New Zealand label, each capsule provides 320 mg EPA and 230 mg DHA, plus vitamin D3. USANA's official product material states that it may help ease muscle soreness after a workout and supports joint function. The adult directions there are two capsules daily with meals.
BiOmega is also NSF Certified for Sport. See What Is Inside USANA BiOmega?

4. Calcium and magnesium: the key to muscle contraction and relaxation
Every time a muscle contracts and relaxes, calcium and magnesium are involved. Magnesium is also needed for more than 300 enzyme reactions, and ATP, the cell's energy molecule, must bind magnesium to be active. Heavy sweating increases magnesium losses, and many people already eat less than they need.
A 2024 systematic review found that magnesium supplementation reduced muscle soreness, improved recovery and had a protective effect against muscle damage.
USANA MagneCal D uses a 1:1 calcium-to-magnesium formula (citrate and carbonate forms, well absorbed and gentle on the stomach), with vitamin D3, silicon and boron. Most people get closer to enough calcium from food than magnesium, so a 1:1 formula adds relatively more magnesium, helping balance your total daily intake and supporting normal muscle, bone and nerve function. The adult directions on the Australia/New Zealand label are two tablets twice daily with food.
MagneCal D is also NSF Certified for Sport. See The Calcium-to-Magnesium Ratio.

5. Joint support: USANA Procosamine (Procosa)
Muscles recover in days; joints, cartilage and tendons adapt much more slowly, yet they bear considerable loads in running, jumping and lifting. For anyone who intends to train for years, joint care is best begun early.
USANA Procosamine — sold as Procosa outside Australia and New Zealand — contains USANA's InCelligence Joint-Support Complex: vegetarian glucosamine (1,500 mg glucosamine hydrochloride in three tablets) with Meriva bioavailable curcumin, plus vitamin C and manganese. Vitamin C is needed for normal collagen formation in cartilage, tendons and ligaments, and glucosamine helps produce collagen and hyaluronic acid to lubricate the joints.
Why not the usual glucosamine with chondroitin? A 2014 study compared the two: among 124 adults with knee osteoarthritis, those taking glucosamine with Meriva curcumin for four months had better physical and emotional scores on a standard joint questionnaire (WOMAC) and walked further on a treadmill test, ahead of the glucosamine-with-chondroitin group from the first month.
USANA's material states that the formula supports a healthy immune and inflammatory response after exercise — part of the body's natural recovery process — helping restore normal structure and function to joints and tendons, and maintaining healthy joint function and comfort. The directions are three tablets daily with meals. Consistency matters, because cartilage takes up nutrients slowly: research on glucosamine with exercise has shown differences between 4 and 12 weeks.

6. Cellular energy: USANA CoQuinone 100
Muscle is one of the tissues richest in coenzyme Q10. CoQ10 is a key part of how mitochondria produce ATP, the energy that powers every muscle contraction. The body makes its own CoQ10, but production declines with age — worth knowing if you are still training hard past 30.
USANA CoQuinone 100 provides 100 mg of CoQ10 and 40 mg of alpha-lipoic acid per capsule, in a lipid mixture designed for absorption. Alpha-lipoic acid helps mitochondria turn glucose into energy and helps recycle CoQ10, and both provide antioxidant protection for the mitochondria. USANA's material states that it supports healthy mitochondrial function, cellular energy production and cardiovascular health. The directions are one or two capsules daily with food.

7. Antioxidants and vitamin C: USANA Proflavanol C200
Hard exercise sharply increases oxygen use, and with it the production of free radicals. Vitamin C is needed for normal collagen formation in muscles, tendons and blood vessels, and supports immune function — which USANA's material notes can be taxed temporarily by intense exercise.
USANA Proflavanol C200 uses USANA's Nutritional Hybrid Technology to combine grape seed extract (200 mg, rich in the bioflavonoids known as OPCs) with 300 mg of Poly C, USANA's vitamin C blend made with mineral salts, in one two-layer tablet. USANA describes it as powerful antioxidant protection that also supports healthy circulation, normal immune function and collagen formation. The Australia/New Zealand label directs adults to take two tablets daily with food.
